Nurturing yourself while traveling
Remember that holiday movie with John Candy and Steve Martin where they completely lose control of their plans on their way home from a work trip? After they endure many unexpected hours traveling together on planes, trains and automobiles, their spirits are exhausted, fed up, and short fused. Have you ever felt like this after a travel day? Yah, me too. There’s something about the whole process that used to drain me, however these days I use a system that really works for my sensitive ways.
Here i have some recommendations on what has allowed me to find ease and grace during the transitions. It feels so good to arrive at my destination with tons of energy, ready explore and see the world!
See
The lights in airports and on airplanes are day lights with lots of blue undertones. Blue light sends signals to our nervous system telling us to stay alert and creates dis-ease. To support the nervous system and allow the eyes to relax try blue blocker sunglasses.
Also, I always carry this eye bra to block all the light. These are amazing if it is an overnight flight. You can find them in Walgreens in the eye aisle.
& finally, Natural Eye drops for dryness are always a plus!
Hear
Now this is an easy one : headphones, of course! But what are you listening to?
For me its audible books, podcasts, and mellow music . Another great source of sounds come from the app NEURO ATHLETE. I love this app because you can listen to the beach, or rain , or atmospheric floating along with brainwave vibrations. Certain hertz of sound have been proven to align and create ease in the brain. The combo of the ocean waves and the buzzing of alpha delta or theta waves just puts me in a mellow trance. I can still hear the chaos of the airplane hustle but i’m still centered and breathing in sync with the ocean. Also, You can have this in the background while you listen to a book, podcast, or music or one my meditations
Smell
Essential oils have healing properties and trigger certain parts of the brain to promote relaxation or stimulation. I also feel like it cleanses the energy and i like to spray the seat on the airplane for freshness.
Lavender , Camomile , Vetiver, Bergamot, Rosemary & Lemon are some of my favorites. I dilute them in water and gently spray on my ankles and wrists for an energetic boost or grounding.
Touch
It all starts with you skin and staying hydrated. So drink H2O to cleanse, purify and hydrate the body. The threads your choose to wear will be your companion and protector from germs so choose wisely.
Dress : Layering is a great way to dress for the airport because you can transition easily to your final destination’s weather. I’ve found it’s easiest to wear comfortable pants with *pockets*, socks and close toed shoes ( keep those toes warm and germ free) , a tee shirt with a hooded second layer & a scarf comes in my bag that could double as a blanket. Keep it COZY!
Taste
In my own experience, I’ve always had a hard time finding nourishing, affordable food in airports. It can be so frustrating and has left me hangry and ungrounded in what felt like an unintentional fast. To find ease when it comes to nourishing I have started to carry raw nuts and gluten free granola with me. It adds a bit of weight but it worth the level headed mindset until I can sit down and nourish myself properly with high alkalizing foods!
For some of you this may sound too minimalistic, if this is the case for you i ask you “ What is something that is transportable that you can prepare for yourself as you travel?” Maybe it’s a sandwich, maybe it’s fresh fruit — whatever it is, tap into what YOU like to run on as a fuel for yourself.
Support yourself by making food choices that align with your dosha. Don’t know what your dosha is — Take my quiz. —>>
